Do registry cleaners really work or do they do more damage?
They may remove redundant or zero entries, but the Registry itself is quite small and the majority of Registry Cleaners will find a number of faults, which will vary from one cleaner to another.
For the average user cleaning the Registry is really an unnecessary task and can cause stability problems or programs to malfunction.
If you really feel that you need to clean the registry use Eusing Free Registry Cleaner:

They can get rid of the excess but don’t get rid of valid entries which may still be causing problems.

Actually, I wouldn’t trust a registry cleaner if you’re a noob. I would recommend McAfee Total Security. They have a tool to clean up the computer. It’s actually awesome. I use to use it.

Only free registry cleaner I would recommend is CCleaner:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Doesn’t clean as well as a retail registry cleaner but wont trash your rig like some of the freebies.
Most are spam. will "clean" 20-40 "errors" but to get the other "1100" or so errors you have you need to buy the retail version. I once ran a free cleaner on a rig I knew had a perfect registry. It said it cleaned about 20 errors but I still had 900 that I could clean if I paid 19.95 for the retail download.

I will never recommend anyone to use registry cleaner as it will harm your system without any long term benefits. Some times it may modify registry keys to accelerate hardware performance to speed up the system. As a result of it, it may damage certain hardware or data .
More over, registry cleaners are designed to open the loop holes which is blocked by default to protect the system and users privacy.
With a click of button don’t expose yourself to strangers and damage your data!

Registry cleaners are only good in the hands of IT pros. For most ordinary users fooled by ads of software companies pushing their software, a reg cleaner is NOT needed. Indeed, where do registry errors come from? Frequent installation/uninstallation of various programs adds up to malware damage. So basically a good security layer (antivirus etc.) and careful usage of installed programs makes reg cleaners unneeded. For testing purposes, it’s best to use either a virtual desktop, or a computer which is not running critical software/tasks.
Running a registry clean-up with a crappy prog and without a backup can really destroy a most stable system.
