What are the chances of being successful at Graphic Design?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

I really want to major in Graphic Design, but I keep hearing how hard it is to find a job with all the competition there is. I’m going to take AP Design and Commercial Art in school this year. I’m not so great with computers, but I’ve been practicing with a tablet and photoshop and improving. Should I continue to pursue Graphic Design, or go for a more stable major?

Don’t listen to people. Go with your hunch. Anything can be difficult or easy in this life. That’s not the point. Anything that is done with the heart goes forward. Competition is a weak way to judge anything. I personally ignore it. Do things based on your internal world, not the external world. People will have all sorts of advices and opinions. It doesn’t matter. Go with what you deep inside feel like doing. And if that doesn’t work, so what? Change it. At least you tried (I doubted it won’t work, following your heart it’s always better).

How good is graphic design as a career?

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

I am thinking about studying graphic design in college. What kinds of jobs are available with this and how good is the paycheck.
I love art and drawing that is why i’m asking. If there are more careers available with art please let me know.

You’re not going to be rich. But you can make a decent living.

But there are many types of jobs out there in many fields. Print designer, web designer, Flash designer, package designer, etc. You can work in an agency, design firm, small to large corporation. Or you can freelance.

But there is alot of competition.

How can I become innovative in graphic design?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I want to do something new in graphic design like glass effect by Microsoft as well as Mac. Many people copy such design to make logo, ads, webpage and software. I only want a way to do something new by myself. I know if I do practice more then I may be possible. If anyone give guidance to me then it will be easy for me to do such design.

if you ask us, then you’re not really doing something innovative. What i do is look at other graphic designer’s works, and get inspiration for something new. You just have to keep looking at designs that are already out there to know what works and what doesn’t

How to pursue graphic design and writing?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

I want to pursue and career in graphic design and/or writing. Currently I go to an online high school in the the 10th grade. I can choose my own electives. I want to know what is the best way to prepare myself to enter these field. Any good advice is truly appreciated.

I am not sure on how to get more chances to get into college, except general better grades. But for graphic design you should study the work of people you like. Exposure to other people’s work should trigger your creativity, and allow you to explore bolder ideas. Do not forget improving your technique(s), to widen your graphic vocabulary.

Similarly for writing, you should read and read, and then write and write, and then read and write.

Perhaps joining a writing club and an arts class might help you to get and provide feedback to others.

Two quotes from Borges
1) Reading is an activity subsequent to writing: more resigned, more civil, more intellectual.
2) I take more pride on the pages I have read, than from the ones I have written.

What is the best keyboard for graphic design?

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

What is the best keyboard for graphic design and serious typing? I have a mac and have been considering the apple wireless keyboard, but am wondering if the smaller size will be uncomfortable for serious typing.

For graphic design, you need to use a graphic pad consistent in size with the type of graphics you design.

What is the difference between Product Design, Interior Design and Graphic Design?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Is a career in Product Design lucrative? I can draw visualize and am creative, starting from scratch, are there any institutes in Mumbai? Is free lancing an option? Any search engine leads me to Interior Design and Graphic Design, Is Product Design a general term for both? Is a graduation in Hotel Management sufficient or engineering is compulsory? Please help!

They are all very different areas of design -

1) Product Design – the design of items we use everyday, it’s very vast really – designing furniture, appliances, phones, cars, could be anything even designing something like a cigarette lighter.

2) Interior Design – deals with the look of spaces inside a building/house: designing a wall that divides a big room, creating special lighting effects.

3) Graphic Design – designing images like posters, advertisments, websites.. maybe I should just say the word ‘Photoshop’ =)

To answer the rest of your question, Hotel Management has liitle to do with either 3 professions – that focuses more on tourism and taking care of a hotel – getting a hotel up & running, fixing up rooms for guests, arranging food & other services. Engineering has something to do with Product & Interior design, but they should incorporate the necessary skills into your course though so you won’t need to graduate as an engineer to build a room or a chair =)
